Lines of Escape has been written in a different style to my
previous works. The book is, for the most part, a work of non-fiction written
in the style of a novel.
The book follows groups of civilians and miliary personnel as they attempt to
escape the invading Japanese forces who land on a number of beaches on the New
Guinea north coast.
Much of the conversation between the characters is factual and was documented
at the time or shortly after the events depicted in Lines of Escape. Some of
the conversation, through necessity, is fictional. When I have used fictional
conversation, I have attempted to make such conversation as realistic and
respectful to those involved as possible.
The authors note at the back of Lines of Escape explain and clarify some of the
events contained within the book’s pages.
Why write what is essentially a work of non-fiction in a novelist style? Simply
to make the stories contained within Lines of Escape accessible to the broader
public, from history buff to adventure reader, from WWII enthusiast to casual
theologian. The book is not written as a heavy historical read, more a
page-turning account of these, in some cases, tragic events.
I hope you enjoy Lines of Escape.
